Highlights of the week
Wild Poliovirus
- No new WPV1 cases reported this week. The total WPV1 cases count for 2025 to date is 1 from Pakistan. In 2024, the total case count remains 98 (25 from Afghanistan and 73 from Pakistan).
- Thirty-nine new WPV1 positive ES reported; All from Pakistan in 2025 this week. The newly reported WPV1 ES are: 22 from Sindh province (3 from Karachi East, 2 each from Karachi Keamari,, Karachi South towns, Kambar, Hyderabad, Sukkur districts and 1 each from Sujawal, Ghotki, Mirpurkhas, Jacobabad, Badin districts, Karachi West, Karachi Central, Karachi Orangi, and Karachi Malir towns), 6 each from Punjab province (3 from Lahore, 2 from Rawalpindi, and 1 from Multan districts) and 6 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (2 from Lakki Marwat, and 1 each from Peshawar, Abottabad, Dera Ismail Khan, and Bajour districts), and 5 from Balochistan province (2 each from Quetta and Chaman districts and 1 from Loralai district) with sample collection dates between 6 th to 15th January 2025. The total ES count to date in 2025 is 39 (all from Pakistan) compared to 741 in 2024 (113 from Afghanistan and 628 from Pakistan).
Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)
- No new cVDPV isolates reported this week. The cVDPV2 cases count in 2024 to date remains 39 (35 from Yemen, 3 from Somalia, and 1 from Occupied Palestinian Territory). In 2023, the count remains 16 (8 each from Somalia and Yemen), while the count of cVDPV2 ES in 2024 to date is 37 (20 from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, 7 from Yemen, 3 each from Somalia and Djibouti, and 2 each from Sudan and Egypt) and in 2023, the count remains 41 (16 from Yemen, 11 from Egypt, 9 from Somalia, and 5 from Sudan)
