Highlights:
- Support for Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan becomes more complex as the government rolls out the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan. Phase II was announced to commence in April 2024, targeting Afghan Citizen Card holders. 156,580 Afghan refugees have returned in the first six months of 2024.
- UNICEF continues to support access to critical nutrition services to reduce acute malnutrition, as currently one in five children in Pakistan are acutely malnourished. In 2024, UNICEF so far treated 115,354 children (56 per cent girls) for severe acute malnutrition.
- UNICEF's support contributes to reducing the number of out of school children, which currently stands at 25.37 million. Through its programmes, UNICEF has reached 180,000 children (46 per cent girls) with formal and informal education in the first six months of 2024.
- UNICEF's 2024 Humanitarian Appeal for Children totals $135.6 million. Despite generous contributions from donors, a 77 per cent funding gap remains.
