The recent erratic rainfalls subsequent landslides and rockfalls in Chitral have left a profound impact on multiple sectors, resulting in extensive damage to private and public infrastructure including, housing, education, transport, communications, water resources, agriculture, and protective structures.
These events have disrupted lives and livelihoods, leaving communities vulnerable and in urgent need of assistance.
Immediately after the rain and snowfall SIF deployed their local teams to assess the Post Disaster Damages and Multi-sectoral Needs.. The SIF field team coordinated with the government, communities and other stakeholders for the data collection, triangulation and cross-verification of information.
The report and the initial information revealed that there are extensive damages to various infrastructure that have created multiple needs to address.
A significant number of homes, mainly constructed with Katcha houses and located on slopes, have been either fully or partially damaged. This has left families in distress and requiring urgent shelter and essential relief and recovery items.
The education sector has faced significant challenges due to damaged road infrastructure and transportation infrastructure, making it difficult for students to access schools regularly that poses the risk of increased school dropouts.
Transport and communications infrastructure have suffered extensive destruction, isolated communities and impeding the flow of goods and services. Rapid assessments and repairs are crucial to restore connectivity and ensure smooth access to affected areas.
In the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector, there have been severe disruptions in water supply systems, leaving communities without clean and safe drinking water.
The agriculture and livestock sectors, vital for livelihoods, have incurred significant damage to crops, lands, orchards, and livestock. Urgent relief efforts, including fodder supply, climate-smart seeds, and livestock vaccinations, are essential for farmers and livestock owners to recover and adopt resilient practices.
Furthermore, reconstruction efforts for fully damaged houses and protective structures are imperative for community safety.
Given these challenges, timely and collaborative interventions among stakeholders, government authorities, and humanitarian organizations are crucial to support Chitral's affected communities. The proposed restoration efforts aim to help these communities rebuild their lives, safeguard their livelihoods, and foster a resilient recovery from the rains, snowfall and floods. By uniting our efforts, we can make a lasting impact and bring hope for a brighter future in Chitral.
