Pakistan: WFP delegation meets SPAPEV Deputy Regional Director, thanks for assistance

Islamabad, December 10th, 2007: A three member delegation of World Food Program (WFP) on Monday met with the Saudi Public Assistance for Pakistan Earthquake Victims, Deputy Regional Director, Dr. Khalid M. Al-Othmani, here at the office and thanked him for monetary assistance.

The WFP was provided US 2 million dollar by the organization (SPAPEV) to purchase wheat (flour bags) for earthquake affected people of Pakistan.

On the occasion, Deputy Regional Director, SPAPEV, briefed the visiting team comprising Peter French (Country Director of WFP), Tahir Nawaz Pipeline Officer, and Amjad Jamal Public Information Officer (WFP) about his organization relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction work and projects details on slide.

He told the delegation that SPAPEV had assisted number of relief organizations working in Pakistan for quake affectees and handed over millions of Riyals relief materials including tents, blankets, quilts, medicine, food packets, and etc. loaded trucks for onward distribution.

He said that the SPAPEV, so far, had distributed thousands of loaded trucks with relief items, including 230,000 blankets, 150,000 quilts, tones of packets of dates, more then 10,000 normal tents, 12,500 winterized shelters, medicine worth 4.0 million Riyals to Ministry of Health, 10,000 stoves, 100,000 food packets containing sugar, pulses, Ghee, Oil, rice, flour 4580tons, etc. and thousands of polypropylene sheets "Tarpal" for the affectees.

It had also provided a huge quantity of relief aid worth millions of riyals to different organization including International Islamic Relief Organization, Al-Kuubaib Foundation, Al-Khidmat Foundation, Read Foundation, ERRA, National Volunteer Movement (NVM), Ministry of Health, AJK, NWFP governments and many other organizations working for earthquake victims of October 8.

Two million dollars was provided to UNICEF by the SPAPEV for quake victims' help besides 0.7 million US dollar to READ Foundation for school materials.

Last year, the organization (SPAPEV) signed a contract of 16.7 million US dollar under which 4000 houses to be built for displaced families of Balakot.

So far, 2400 houses have been built to accommodate the inhabitants of Balakot area. The work on remaining 1600 houses is in full swing and hopefully, the keys of the houses would be handed over to homeless families shortly.

Not only this, our organization had also provided a huge quantity of relief goods worth millions of Saudi Riayls to NWFP and Baluchistan flood affectees. Continuing the mission to serve the humanity with missionary zeal, we recently, dispatched another consignment for Baluchistan flood affectees on the instruction of Prince Naif, Saudi Interior Minister.

The estimated cost of relief material sent for Baluchistan flood affectees was 1,500,000 Saudi Riyals.

The Deputy Regional Director told the delegation that Since October 8, 2005 Earthquake, our organization, Saudi Public Assistance for Pakistan Earthquake Victims, (SPAPEV) is engaged in the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction work in quake hit Azad Jammu Kashmir and North West Province of Pakistan.

Our mission here to help revive the lives of Pakistani brethren who were badly affected in the October 8 devastating earthquake, he said.

Following the mission, and direction of our leadership in Saudi Arabia, the custodian of two holy mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, and General Supervisor of our organization SPAPEV, Prince Naif Bin Abdul Aziz who is also the Interior Minister of Saudi Arabia and guidance of Dr. Saed al-Harithy, our team is working in AJK and NWFP quake ravaged areas and completing the projects there. Later, WFP Country Director, Peter French presented shields to Dr. Khalid Al-Othmani and a thanks letter for Prince Naif (Interior Minister of Saudi Arabia) for monetary assistance provided through SPAPEV.

WFP Director also lauded the personal efforts of Dr. Khalid taken for quake affectees of AJK and NWFP people.

Earlier, the Director, briefed the Deputy Regional Director Dr. Khalid about the WFP projects including health, education and civic amenities being carried out at various places and completed with the support of Government of Pakistan.
