Pakistan: US envoy donates sewing machines for earthquake survivors

American Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker has donated five sewing machines to the Jaba community centre near Shinkiari as a personal Eid gift for the women survivors of earthquake.

The purpose of the donation is to start a women's sewing group.

"We hope this centre provides a safe venue for women to pursue activities and learn trades that will strengthen their livelihoods," said a US official.

Over Eid holidays US Embassy personnel and US Marines from Shinkiari hospital experienced Pakistani culture and hospitality from earthquake victims.

The Americans visited Jaba refugee camp in Balakot where they set up a new US-Pakistan Community Centre and learned how to play cricket from the children living in the camp.

A building constructed by the US Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ("Seabees") was used for the new US Pakistan Community Centre.

The women and children came together to paint murals inside and outside of the building, while the young boys taught US Marines how to play cricket in a field nearby.

The US Marines from Shinkiari Hospital also donated small radios to the community centre and to some families in the refugees camp.
