Pakistan: SPAPEV completing 4000 houses in Balakot, signs contract of 1000 houses for Bagh quake affectees

Islamabad, May 15th, 2008: Saudi Public Assistance for Pakistan Earthquake Victims, is completing 4000 pre-fabricated houses in Balakot Red Zone area to resettle the affectees of October 8, 2005 devastated earthquake.

This was stated by Media Director, Abdullah Al-Baraak while briefing media men here at a local hotel after visiting Balakot housing project being constructed for displaced families of earthquake. The project is being completed at a cost of 16.7 million US dollar and shortly, all the remaining keys of the pre-fabricated houses would be given to scattered families of Red Zone.

So far, the Media Director, said that 2800 houses have been completed while the keys of 2700 houses had already been provided to the families of Balakot for residential purposes. 'These houses have all facilities including toilet, kitchen, two bed room and a varanda (compound) and the material were brought from foreign countries to avoid any damages in future, ' he said.

He also said that the organization (SPAPEV) has planned to start a similar project of houses in Bagh area and for this purpose, a contract had already been signed few months ago here in a simple ceremony. According to the contract, some 1000 houses would be built at a cost of 5.1 million US dollar.

To a question, the newly appointed Media Director, said that work on the Balakot housing project is in full swing, and the remaining 1200 houses would be ready for residential purposes in couple of weeks. He told that the SPAPEV was established on the directives of King Abdulah Bin Abdul Aziz, the custodian of two holy mosques, supervised by Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud, the Interior Minister of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and under the guidance of its chairman Dr.Saed Al-Harithy, Advisor to Interior Minister.

The organization, since then was engaged in the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction work started for the people of quake-ravaged areas of Azad Jammu Kashmir and NWFP to mitigate their sufferings caused by the Earthquake. He said that funds allocated and provided by Saudi Arabia for various projects were being utilized properly and there is full check and balance system in the organization, he added.

It is worth mentioning here, that SPAPEV soon after the establishment, had distributed huge quantity of relief goods worth millions of riyals including 12500 tents, hundred of thousands quilts, blankets, food packets, dates, G.I.Sheets, Plastic sheets, Tarpaulines, 4.0 million riayls medicine among the quake victims of AJK and NWFP. The SPAPEV had also handed over hundreds of loaded trucks with relief goods to different relief agencies including Al-Khubaib Foundation, Al-Khidmat Foundation, ERRA, NVM, PRCS, IIRO, and released about two million US dollar to UNICEF, 2 million dollar to World Food Programe, 0.7 million dollar to Read Foundation for purchasing school material, and 0.5 million for the establishment of shelter schools in Kotli Sattian Murree. The organization had also distributed many loaded trucks of relief material among the flood affectees of Charsada, (NWFP) and Kharan, Noshki, Panjgore, and other Balochistan areas.
