HIGHLIGHTS

• Between 12 and 16 April, persistent heavy rainfall and lightning resulted in the tragic loss of 53 lives, with over 50 people sustaining injuries and more than 1,400 houses damaged across Pakistan.

• The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA),
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) recorded 32 fatalities, 43 injuries and damage to over 1,300 houses as well as loss of livestock and property damage.

• The provincial Government of KP declared flood emergency in 14 districts to provide relief and restore communication networks and water supply.

• In Balochistan, eight fatalities, eight injuries, 22 houses and other infrastructure were damaged. The provincial Government declared urban flood emergency in Queta district due to continuous rains.

• Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported 13 fatalities and five injuries.

• The heavy rainfall damaged and disrupted the wheat harvest across Pakistan.

SITUATIONAL UPDATE

From 12 to 16 April, Pakistan faced unprecedented devastation caused by heavy rains, lightning and flash floods. This unfortunate event led to the tragic loss of 53 human lives, with over 50 individuals sustaining injuries. Further, 13 schools and over 1,400 houses were damaged, while over 200 livestock perished, and various other properties were impacted.

According to reports from PDMA KP, rain-related incidents caused 32 deaths, 43 injuries, damage to over 1,300 houses, 13 schools and nearly 200 livestock perished in several districts across the province. Considering the losses, the Secretary Relief, Rehabilitation and Settlement Department declared flood emergency in the districts of Dir Lower, Dir Upper, Swat, Kohistan Kolai Palas, Mohmand, Bajour, Tank, Dera Ismail Khan, Chitral Lower, Chitral Upper, Khyber, Peshawar and Charsadda with immediate effect till 30 April 2024 for provision of relief, restoration of damaged communication network and water supply.

According to PDMA Balochistan, heavy rains and flash floods resulted in urban flooding, claiming eight lives, eight injuries, and damaging 50 houses, a bridge, and two roads. The heavy rains affected the districts of Surab, Pishin, Dera Bugti, Loralai, Kech, Gawadar, Chaghi and Chaman. In response to the ongoing downpours, the provincial Government declared an urban flood emergency in Quetta district.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab reported 13 fatalities, five injuries and damage to crops and other properties.
