Pakistan Earthquake 20 Feb 2009

  • Around 8:45 AM (03:48 UTC) an Earthquake of magnitude 5.8 (Pakistan Meteorological Department) hit the northern areas of Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PaK) with the epicentre 95 km NE of Islamabad on the borderline of PaK. The depth of the earthquake was recorded to be 26 km (16.2 miles) at the epicentre.- According to State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) heavy jolts were felt in the northern districts of Pakistan Administered Kashmir: Poonch, Rawalakot, Bagh, Neelum and Muzaffarabad.

The jolts were also felt in Punjab, Hazara division and most parts of North West Frontier Province.

- State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) through its State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) collected information from all District Disaster Management Authorities of eight districts. According to the preliminary report, no casualties or damage to property has been reported. 6 school children have sustained injuries due to panic in Abbaspur, Poonch district and Bagh City.

- The Deputy Commissioner of Neelum district reported that due to landslide Neelum Valley road from Chaliana has been blocked and cannot be reopened through local machinery.

- No incidents were reported so far in the remaining four southern districts of PaK: Bhimber, Mirpur, Kotli and Sudhnut.

SITUATION

1. SDMA reports that 5 girls sustained injuries in Girls High School Abbaspur, subdivision of Poonch district and 1 child had sustained minor injuries in Kashmir Public School in Bagh City mainly due to panic. SDMA is verifying the media reports of collapse of 5 houses in village Panjkot of subdivision Naseer Abad, Muzaffarabad district.

2. According to State Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Agency (SERRA), 2 kacha (mud/straw) houses were reportedly damaged and 3 persons injured in Panjkot, Muzaffarabad. 3 animal shelters were damaged in Hattain, Muzaffarabad and cracks found in retaining wall near Government Office in Muzaffarabad city. SERRA also reported injuries sustained to school children out of panic and a landslide blocking Neelum Valley Road.

3. Media reports that at least 10 school children were injured in wall collapse incidents in Muzaffarabad. The jolts were also felt in several cities in Punjab and parts of North West Frontier Province. A newly constructed government school building was partially damaged in Muzzafarabad.
