Pakistan: 50,000 blankets, quilts being distributed among Oct. 8 affectees

Islamabad, January 23rd, 2007: At least 50,000 blankets and same number of quilts are being distributed among quake affectees of October 8 devastated earthquake of Pakistan and the relief work in these areas would continue till their complete rehabilitation.

This was stated by Dr. Khalid M. Othmani, Deputy Regional Director, Saudi Public Assistance for Pakistan Earthquake Victims (SPAPEV), while talking to mediamen here at his office on Tuesday.

Dr. Khalid said that the organization was distributing relief materials among quake affected families of Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) and North West Frontier Province of Pakistan (NWFP) to mitigate their sufferings and save them from severe cold winter.

He said that the organization (SPAPEV), soon after the earthquake of Pakistan which played havoc in some parts of country, established the relief office here to help facilitate the suffering people of quake ravaged areas of AJK and NWFP.

Earlier, the organization, had distributed and dispatched a huge quantity of relief goods of worth millions of riyals to quake affected areas. So far, the relief goods loaded thousands of trucks had been dispatched to AJK and NWFP for onward distribution since Oct 8 earthquake, Dr.Khalid told newsmen.

Besides this, he said our organization had also handed over a large quantity of relief goods including thousands of tents, some are special one, hundred of thousands of blankets, same number of quilts, food packets for hundreds of families, stoves, medicines of 4 million riyals and other necessary items of daily use to different NGOs and other international organization like WFP 2 million USD, and 2 million USD to UNICEF, working in Pakistan. During the flood in monsoon season which destroyed crops and some areas of NWFP including Charsada, the SPAPEV dispatched relief goods convoy of loaded trucks to that affected areas.

While temporary shelters and school bags to the children of Kotli Satian, Murree were also provided after completing the survey so that the school children could continue their education properly. The cost of these shelters was about 0.5 million rupees.

Dr.Khalid said that our organization is still working with Pakistani brethren and this assistance would continue in days to come until and unless the complete rehabilitation work is done in these affected areas.

'We are dispatching over 50,000 blankets to quake-hit areas of AJK to keep the quake victims warm and the same number of quilts are also being distributed in the affected areas, The cost of these quilts and blankets is about two million dollars of US' he said.

Replying to a question, Dr. Khalid said that the organization (SPAPEV) has signed contract of 16.7 million dollar few months back for the construction of pre-fabricated houses which was due to be provided before the winter season.

But, now all technical problems have been removed and the houses would be provided to quake affected families in couple of months, he hoped.

He assured that the organization would continue relief and rehabilitation efforts just on humanitarian basis and said that Saudi people think Pakistan as their second home. He added that the organization was working in Pakistan under the guidance of Saudi high ranking officials, King Abdullah, and supervision of Prince Naif, Interior Minister of KSA, Advisor Saad Al Arabi and in Pakistan Saudi Ambassador Ali Awadh Asseri who is supporting us in all our projects being carried out in the quake-hit areas.

Dr.Khalid said that every Saudi people hearts beats with their Pakistani brethren and the ties between the two brotherly countries would be more strengthened in days to come.

Media Director, (SPAPEV), Mr.Ibrahim Homaily, and Director Finance and Administration Mr.Hamad Ibrahim Al-Hamad were also present on the occasion.
