Factbox - Security developments in Pakistan, 24 Oct 2008

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Following are security developments in Pakistan at 0900 GMT on Friday:

BAJAUR - Pakistani forces using artillery and aircraft have killed at least 18 militants over the past 24 hours in attacks on hideouts in the Bajaur region on the Afghan border, paramilitary officials said.

The army says more than 1,000 militants have been killed in an offensive in Bajaur since August but there is no independent verification of that casualty estimate.

NORTH WAZIRISTAN - Bodies of two men were found in North Waziristan, a militant sanctuary on the Afghan border to the southwest of Bajaur. Residents said the two were killed after militants accused them of spying for the United States.

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN - Five children were killed in an accidental explosion in the South Waziristan region on the Afghan border on Thursday. The children had apparently found some sort of explosive device or piece of old ordnance and had been playing with it, a government official said.
