Highlights of the week
Wild Poliovirus
▪One new WPV1 case in 2025 from Pakistan was reported this week. The newly WPV1 case was reported from Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with date of onset of paralysis on 14th May 2025. The total WPV1 cases count for 2025 to date is 14 (2 from Afghanistan and 12 from Pakistan) and in 2024, the total case count remains 99 (25 from Afghanistan and 74 from Pakistan).
▪ Seven new WPV1 ES reported in 2025 this week from Pakistan. The newly reported WPV1 ES are as follows: 2 each from Sindh province (Larkana and Mirpurkhas districts), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (Wazir-South Lower and Wazir-South Upper districts), and Balochistan province (Gwadur and Quetta districts); and 1 from Punjab province (Rawalpindi district). The dates of samples collection are between 5th – 23rd May 2025. The total ES count to date in 2025 is 356 (30 from Afghanistan and 326 from Pakistan) compared to 741 in 2024 (113 from Afghanistan and 628 from Pakistan).
Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)
▪One cVDPV2 case in 2025 from Yemen reported this week. The cVDPV2 case was reported from Marib province/district with date of onset on 13th March 2025. The cVDPV2 cases count in 2025 to date is 6 (1 from Djibouti, 2 from Sudan, and 3 from Yemen) compared to 53 in 2024 (44 from Yemen, 7 from Somalia,1 from Occupied Palestinian Territory and 1 from Sudan).
▪One new cVDPV2 ES in 2025 from Djibouti reported this week. The newly reported cVDPV2 ES is from Arta province/district with sample collection date on 4th May 2025. The number of cVDPV2 isolates from ES in 2025 to date is 26 (16 from Djibouti, 7 from Occupied Palestinian Territory and 3 from Somalia) as compared to 49 in 2024 (20 from Occupied Palestinian Territory, 12 from Yemen, 9 from Djibouti, 3 from Somalia, 2 each from Egypt and Sudan, and 1 in Bahrain).
▪One new cVDPV1 ES in 2025 from Djibouti reported this week. The newly reported cVDPV1 ES is from Djibouti province/district with sample collection date on 4th May 2025. This ES was earlier reported as cVDPV2 and is a mixture of cVDPV2 + cVDPV1. Total of cVDPV1 ES in 2025 to date is 9; all from Djibouti.
