Amsterdam, October 10, 2005 - On Sunday the first shipment of medical emergency kits was flown in to Pakistan by order of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). After the earthquake, relief efforts were started up immediately in the affected areas in Pakistan and the Indian part of Kashmir, but are being hindered because many victims are buried in debris. The number of casualties as a result of the earthquake is still increasing.

IDA Foundation is a wholesaler that supplies medicines and medical supplies to developing countries and is specialised in the distribution of emergency medicines after calamities. "We keep these medical emergency kits in our standard stock for organisations like Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the World Health Organization (WHO), so that we can act swiftly when necessary", according to Lex de Wijn, Director Sales & Operations of IDA Foundation in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Several shipments to the affected areas are planned for this week; among them are orders for the Red Cross and the WHO. The medical emergency kits are assembled especially, containing around 300 medicines, medical supplies and medical instruments to supply 10,000 people over a period of 3 months with emergency aid.

These emergency medicines are kept standard in stock in IDA's warehouse in De Meern, The Netherlands, and can thus be shipped swiftly to their destination. Thousands of people lost their lives last weekend due to the massive earthquake. Many people have become homeless. Especially in the remote, mountainous areas it is difficult for relief efforts to get going. The hospitals' medicine supplies are buried under the rubble. With winter approaching, there will be an urgent need for emergency relief supplies. Approximately 140 people are working at IDA Foundation in Amsterdam and in the warehouse in De Meern. The organisation operates with a not-for-profit objective and aims to supply developing countries with affordable medicines. Emergency relief organizations, the UN, ministries and hospitals in developing countries in Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, are among IDA's customers.
