JENIN CAMP INFORMATION
- There are 23,628* Palestine Refugees registered in the camp as of 2022.
- Jenin camp was established in 1953.
- Four schools serve around 2,000 students
- One health centre provides primary health care including reproductive health, infant and child care, immunizations, screening and medical check-ups and treatment

On Saturday 8 July, The Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the oPt (OCHA) and UNRWA West Bank Field Office jointly facilitated a visit to Jenin camp, for more than 45 representatives from 25 Member States’ representative offices, consular missions and partners. The Deputy Commission General of UNRWA attended. The visit was crucial to provide a timely first-hand overview of the impact the Recent Israeli forces military operation in the camp has had on its residents, community and residential infrastructure, as well as UNRWA installations and operations. By touring the camp, the delegation experienced the level of destruction in the camp’s main roads, including surrounding UNRWA’s four schools and health clinic.

On the same day, UNRWA’s four schools in the camp reopened, after confirming that water, electricity and sewage network were properly functioning. Less than half of the students attended, with some fearful of leaving their homes. UNRWA is currently assessing whether these students are from the families who have been displaced from the camp, thus are unable to reach the schools. UNRWA is exploring the possibility of providing transportation arrangements for affected students and implementing remote learning modalities. UNRWA is liaising with humanitarian partners, including UNICEF, UNESCO, War Child Holland, the Norwegian Refugee Council and YMCA, on the provision of mental health and psycho-social support to students, as well as school bags, stationary, hygiene and psychological support kits. UNRWA protection teams also began routes and approaches for children to reach the schools from within the camp to improve the safety of access to education.

As of 10 July, UNRWA has issued 24 payments in the form of rental subsidies to 24 families who were displaced. The team is expected to conclude the assessment process by 11 July, with a total of 700 families assessed. The assistance is currently prioritizing families whose houses have been destroyed or severely damaged. In addition to UNRWA cash-based assistance to recover from the infrastructure damages caused by the military operation, Mercy Corps will be covering 500 families (with partial damages) with a cash-based assistance of 1,640 Israeli Shekels (nearly 445 US$) per family, as per survival minimum expenditure basket. Save the Children will also cover 100 families with the same amount and on the same basis.

The UNRWA temporary health clinic is still operating on the ground of the PA school located right outside the camp and close to the PRCS hospital. UNRWA has conducted a thorough assessment of its clinic in the camp, which contains a severely damaged section that cannot be repaired but would need to be demolished and reconstructed. The clinic remains in one of the most volatile areas of the camp and security and safety assessments suggest it needs to be moved on a permanent basis, in due course.

On the dangers associated with unexploded ordnance/explosive remnants of war (UXO/ERW), UNMAS technical staff traveled to Jenin, on 10 July, to carry out a risk assessment to determine demining necessity on the ground. UXO risk awareness and Training of Trainers activities are also planned, focusing primarily on UNRWA frontline staff, including sanitation laborers, school attendants and guards. UNRWA is also mapping routes for children moving to/from schools in camp, as well as routes for sanitation labourers moving in the camp to clear waste, in an attempt to designate them as ‘safe passage’ UNRWA has an outstanding request to Israel to provide detailed information on locations of UXO/ERW that they are aware of following the ISF operation.
