Days 870 - 876 since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip

Highlights

The Gaza Strip

  • The security situation in the Gaza Strip remains unstable, with humanitarian partners on high alert for a potential regional escalation of conflict. Significant military activities including killing of civilians in Israeli aerial attacks, shelling, and gunfire are continued to be reported, including incidents both far from and in the vicinity of the “yellow line”. According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), as reported by OCHA, 618 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since the ceasefire.
  • On 28 February, the Israeli authorities closed all crossings into the Gaza Strip, leading to the suspension of medical evacuations and raising concerns about food security and fuel supplies needed to sustain humanitarian operations. On 3 March, COGAT announced the reopening of Kerem Shalom Crossing for the “gradual entry of humanitarian aid” into the Gaza Strip and to enable the rotation of international staff.
  • As a risk mitigation measure, UNRWA and other UN partners implemented measures to ration fuel consumption, shifting to life‑saving operations only. Among other steps, UNRWA reduced generator operating hours in collective shelters, resulting in decreased availability of electricity and water.
  • As the crossing closure led to shortages of essential food commodities and cooking supplies, one community kitchen in Khan Younis, supported by UNRWA through its job creation programme, has been forced to completely suspend its operations. Thousands of displaced families rely on hot meals prepared by community kitchens supported by UNRWA for their daily intake, increasing risks of food insecurity.
  • The Sulafa Embroidery Centre, a long-standing project supported by UNRWA to empower women in Gaza and promote Palestinian cultural heritage, recently reopened its office in Gaza City for the first time since the beginning of the war.

West Bank, including East Jerusalem

  • The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has been under heightened movement restrictions since the outbreak of regional conflict on 28 February, with movement between governorates particularly hampered by Israeli forces. Missile fragments and interceptor shrapnel have landed across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
