UN halts food distribution in Gaza

The United Nations has suspended all food distribution programmes in Gaza after demonstrators stormed one if its compounds.

The United Nations agency assisting Palestinians UNRWA says the breaking into its compound in Gaza which appears to have been preplanned was unacceptable.

UNRWA says all relief and distribution centers will remain closed until guarantees are given by all relevant groups that its operations can continue unhindered.

Up to 800,000 Palestinians benefit from the agency's food distribution programme.

UNRWA is currently grappling with a 67.2 million dollar budget shortfall, which has necessitated the suspension of cash assistance to some of the beneficiaries.

The agency says demonstrations against its plans to cut some of the relief assistance programmes have been going on over the past week, compromising efforts to provide much needed humanitarian service to Palestinian refugees in Gaza.
