February 4th , 2017 ― Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS) has recently procured high-tech medical equipment for the Al-Shifaa Medical Complex's specialized surgery building, to be used in cardiothoracic surgeries.
According to Dr. Raed Al-Oraini, Head, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Al-Shifaa Medical Complex, this is the first time in history that such a major endoscopic operation is performed by a local surgical team to remove pulmonary cysts for an 80-year- old at Gaza's public hospitals.
"This contribution by QRCS is highly appreciated. With the newly arrived technology, we have so far performed three successful surgeries, which need an incision of only 2 cm, unlike traditional surgeries that involved cutting as long as 15-20 cm," he explained.
Cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Al-Oraini said, is a complicated procedure that requires special skills to tackle emergency and chronic cases. A larger and better-trained medical cadre of cardiothoracic surgeons is necessary to serve Gaza's 2 million population. "
This success will reduce the bill of treatment abroad and pave the road for donors like QRCS to do more for the advancement of health services in Gaza," he commented.
Eng. Abdullah Al-Madhoun, the specialized surgery building project manager at QRCS's Mission in Gaza, stated that the new supplies included two cardiothoracic surgery endoscopes for adults and children, surgical instruments, and the latest world-class medical equipment.
These procurements are part of the specialized surgical building development project, with $18 million funding from the Programme of the Gulf Cooperation Council for the Reconstruction of Gaza, under the supervision of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
