Insecurity Insight identified 1030 incidents that took place at refugee camps in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) between 07 October 2023 and 31 May 2024. Incidents nearly doubled in May compared to previous months. In the Gaza Strip where 772 incidents were recorded, most were recorded in Jabalia Refugee Camp (184) and Nuseirat Refugee Camp (181). At least 314 incidents took place in the West Bank, with high numbers recorded in Jenin Refugee Camp (63). Damage to refugee camps by explosive weapons use was frequently reported in Gaza whilst camp raids were more common in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Access the data on HDX.
The incidents reported below are not a complete nor a representative list of all events that took place at refugee camps in June 2024 in the oPt and have not been independently verified through on the ground investigations. There is a delay in reporting incidents due to our open-source verification process. Numbers may change if or when further information is made available. The Gaza Government Media Office (GMO) reported that 64 children, 57 women, and 37 elderly people were among the fatalities, and 153 children, 161 women and 54 elderly people were among the injured. In addition, 89 houses, residential buildings and a market were hit during the operation without prior notification. Aqbat Jabr Refugee Camp
01 June 2024: In Aqbat Jabr Refugee Camp, Jericho governorate, two Palestinian children, aged 16 and 17 years were shot and killed by Israeli forces. The boys were carrying stones while heading toward a square for cars confiscated from Palestinians and they discovered that there were Israeli forces behind the cars from a distance of 50 to 80 metres away when they were shot. Jenin Refugee Camp
06 June 2024: In Jenin Refugee Camp, Jenin governorate, three Palestinians, including a 17-year-old boy were shot and killed and 20 others injured 20 others by Israeli forces, including an undercover unit. During the operation, an Israeli military helicopter hit some areas in the camp, damaging at least two houses. An exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Palestinians was also reported. Footage shows an Israeli military jeep chasing two Palestinians, including a child, while they were riding on a motorcycle, and were shot from behind. 13 June 2024: In Jenin Refugee Camp, Jenin governorate, the camp was bulldozed by Israeli forces, destroying key infrastructure, including electricity poles and wires, electricity generators and water and sewage networks. 26 June 2024: In Jenin Refugee Camp, Jenin governorate, one Israeli soldier was killed, and 16 others were injured by explosives planted underground by Palestinians during an eight-hour Israeli military operation. Israeli forces, including undercover forces, arrested three Palestinians, including a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and a doctor who had recently been released from Israeli prison. Israeli forces exchanged fire with Palestinians, who also used pipe bombs. The PRCS reported that one Palestinian was injured by live ammunition and shrapnel, and another was physically assaulted by Israeli forces.
