Introduction
Due to our strong belief in developing the Palestinian health sector and in line with our national health vision towards building an integrated and sustainable health system that contributes to improving the quality of health services provided , we present here with the updated essential medicine list for the year 2022 which consists of 458 active pharmaceutical ingredients in the form of 647 pharmaceutical products.
The updated list of essential medicines is one of the most important components of the national medicines policy and the most important pillars necessary for rational use of medicine and ensuring its safety, effectiveness and fair distribution among the population. This list also helps direct the purchase and distribution of medicines and provide financial allocations for them. Moreover , it serves as a guiding framework for local drug manufacturers.
The first essential medicine list was issued in the year 2000 in cooperation with World Health Organization, and in 2008 and 2013 a comprehensive review and update of the list was carried out, and after that the list continued to be partially updated by the drug and therapeutic committees.
Recently, the National Technical Committee formed by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in partnership with the World Health Organization and through the General directorate of Pharmacy made a comprehensive review and update of the list of Palestinian essential medicines in line with evidence-based treatment protocols and to meet the priority health needs of the population and the most common diseases in Palestine.
