The head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, David Shearer, says the situation is critical in Gaza as a result of factional fighting between Hamas and Fatah.
Shearer told UN Radio today that the people of Gaza City have been forced to remain indoors, many of the markets are not functioning, and the main crossing point for bringing in supplies has been closed for the last three days.
"The inter-factional fighting has died down somewhat over the last 24 hours or so, but the unfortunate thing is that the Israelis have begun to hit Hamas bases and vehicles, Hamas militants, and that has, in a sense also caused the deaths of approximately about 10 Palestinians as well."
Mr. Shearer said the main UN offices inside Gaza City helping Palestinian refugees have been closed because of the fighting.
