Islamic Relief condemns the brutal killing and wounding of hundreds of civilians in the Gaza strip over the last two days. The government of Israel is proving to the world over and over again, this time in the designated safe area of Al Mawasi, and yesterday in a school housing civilians in Nuseirat that it’s willing to kill innocent men, women and children in pursuit of its end goals.
It’s a terrifying precedent for a nation state to set.
Islamic Relief team members were forced to evacuate the Al Mawasi area following the attacks on Saturday and described scenes of absolute destruction. The staff have reported that there is no water and electricity, the sewage network is totally destroyed, and people are now just trying to find somewhere to stay.
An Islamic Relief aid worker says:
“They are people who are just staying in tents after they lost their homes, their loved ones, their livelihoods. They were asked to evacuate their places. They did. They were forced to live without proper food, water, and in poor health condition. They did. They international community said they will protect them. They did not.
I spoke to our team and I could hardly reach them on phone. One of them had to evacuate to his destroyed house. I could hear the sounds of his children trying to find a safe spot to stay the night.”
The ongoing military strikes in so called safe areas like Al Mawasi which have caused mass casualties are a reminder there are no safe places for civilians in Gaza. Islamic Relief is calling for a ceasefire, an end to civilian casualties, and aid access to be allowed to flow back into the enclave in the quantities needed to halt spreading famine. The siege and killing in Gaza must end.”
