East Jerusalem, 1 November 2024 - The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany signed an agreement to provide EUR 6 million towards supporting the UN2720 Mechanism for Gaza, designed to expedite the delivery of humanitarian aid. This commitment aligns with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2720 (2023), which calls for the creation of an operational framework under the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza (SHRC) to support immediate humanitarian needs in Gaza.

UNOPS was requested to design, operationalize, and manage the Mechanism under the leadership of the SHRC. The UN2720 Mechanism’s objective is to support expediting, streamlining, and accelerating of the humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza, through the established corridors in Jordan, Cyprus and Egypt, and other routes that further enhance this crucial aid.

The allocated funds will support the following key initiatives:

● Essential logistics support: Procurement of trucks to enable the delivery of humanitarian aid by UN organizations inside Gaza as well as aid delivery from Jordan by the Jordan Hashemite Charitable Organization (JHCO).

● Operational efficiency: Essential operating costs to facilitate operations along the Jordan corridor, including fuel provisions.

● Optimizing aid flow infrastructure: Establishment of truck holding areas at Allenby Bridge and Al Ghabawi in order to expedite the provision of supplies.

“We are grateful for Germany's substantial and generous contribution, which will enhance the operational capacity and effectiveness of the UN2720 Mechanism at a critical time,” said Ms. Karuna Herrmann, UNOPS Director in Jerusalem. “This partnership enables us to better support our teams on the ground and strengthen the UN2720 Mechanism’s capacity to deliver swift, reliable channels for life-saving aid to reach those in Gaza who need it most.”

According to Ulrike Borrmann, Deputy Head of the German Representative Office to the Palestinian Territories, “the humanitarian needs in Gaza are unprecedented. Hence, our current focus is to enable and expedite the safe distribution of essential goods to the Palestinian people in Northern Gaza and beyond. Germany, therefore, is pleased to partner with UNOPS in addressing the humanitarian crises in Gaza."

The partnership between UNOPS and the Representative Office of Germany will contribute to the enhancement of the UN2720 Mechanism operations along the Jordanian corridor and inside Gaza.
