FRAGILE RESTORATION OF COMMUNICATION SERVICES ACROSS GAZA: AT RISK OF ANOTHER COMPLETE BLACKOUT

The partial restoration of telecommunications in Gaza on 14 June offered only a fragile reprieve amid a rapidly deteriorating crisis. While connectivity was reestablished following repairs to damaged fibre routes—cutting off Gaza City and the north since 10 June, and the entire Strip since 12 June—thanks to sustained advocacy and granted access for telecom technical teams, the situation remains critically unstable.

The crisis persists, with new disruptions. Yet another blackout has now disconnected southern and central Gaza due to a fibre cut caused by ongoing hostilities. This has resulted in a complete loss of internet connectivity and severely degraded mobile network services in the affected areas. Technical teams are working intensively to identify the precise location of the damage and restore connectivity.

In a context already crippled by severe access restrictions and infrastructure damage, the nearly exhausted fuel and a lack of engine oil—essential for powering generators, further compounds the crisis. Without immediate resupply, telecom operators may run out of fuel within days, risking a total collapse of the telecommunications infrastructure. Such an outcome would sever access to emergency services, halt humanitarian coordination, and leave the affected population entirely cut off from life-saving information and assistance.

Key Impacts

• Communications Services Failure Risks across Gaza, causing a complete telecommunications and internet connectivity blackout.

• Severely Degraded Mobile Networks are at imminent risk of shutting down within days.

• Disruption to Security Communications Systems, such as VHF connectivity, leading humanitarian response efforts to a halt.
