Gaza’s unemployment rate reaches 31.5%

May 29, 2012: The quarterly report of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics indicates that unemployment in the Gaza Strip has reached 31.5% in the first quarter of 2012, compared to 30.3% in the preceding quarter. The unemployment rate in the West Bank is 20.1%.

The percentage of women who do not participate in the work force in Gaza is 86.3%. The unemployment rate among women who do participate in the work force is 46.5%, compared to 28.4% among men in the Gaza Strip.

The highest unemployment rate, 33.9%, was recorded in Gaza’s northern district. Unemployment in the 25 to 29 age bracket is 58.9%, the highest rate relative to other age groups.

Thirty-nine percent of the work force is employed in the public sector. Salaried employees account for 74.4% of the work force, 16.5% are self-employed and 2.9% are business owners.
