Caritas Condemns Resumption of Airstrikes on Gaza and Urges Immediate Ceasefire to Prevent Further Civilian Deaths

Caritas strongly condemns the resumption of airstrikes across Gaza, which have resulted in the deaths of over 400 people and injured hundreds more. This marks the largest escalation of violence since the ceasefire in January and has once again plunged civilians into fear, suffering, and displacement.

The bombardment is a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law. We urgently call for the immediate reinstatement of the ceasefire to prevent further loss of life and protect the dignity and safety of all civilians. The protection of innocent lives must be the foremost priority.

The situation is further compounded by a full blockade of humanitarian aid and the continued closure of the Rafah crossing since March 2, increasing the risk of mass starvation in Gaza. That, combined with physical injuries and mental health effects, has already created a health crisis that will take decades to overcome.

“Conditions in Gaza were already an extreme humanitarian catastrophe, with people living in famine, without food, water, shelter, sewage removal or any reliable basic services. The blockade of aid and renewed attacks will exacerbate the situation dramatically. Caritas is pleading for an immediate ceasefire and unfettered humanitarian access, and urges all parties in the conflict and the entire international community to make this an immediate priority. Every moment that passes without action costs more innocent lives,” said Alistair Dutton, Secretary General Caritas Internationalis.

Caritas stands in solidarity with all those affected by this renewed violence and urges all parties, particularly the State of Israel, to cease hostilities immediately. Civilians must never be targets. The protection of human lives and the restoration of humanitarian access must be the top priorities.
