On 14th day of war: Israel rejects truce, offensive continues

The Israeli bombings continue in the Gaza Strip, despite the fact that the United Nations finally, on the 14th day of the military offensive, approved a Resolution for a cease-fire with 14 votes favourable and the sole abstention of the United States. The Israeli air force and navy hit some thirty targets throughout the Gaza Strip, from Beit Hanun and Beit Lahya, in the north, to the city of Rafah, in the extreme south of the territory, bringing the Palestinian death toll of the offensive to 778. According to the Palestinian Maan news agency, a Ukrainian citizen, killed with her son in a bombing last night in the Ash-Shaifa district, on the outskirts of Gaza City, was the first foreign victim of the 'molten lead' operation begun on December 27. The local press also reports that shortly before dawn (when the UN resolution was already approved), Israeli ground troops penetrated into the area of Qarara, near Khan Younis, in the south, and demolished over fifty homes. At the conclusion of an internal security cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced that Israel rejects the truce: "The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) will continue to operate in order to defend the citizens of Israel and will carry out the task it was given for the operation", stated the Premier. The Israeli government this morning already ordered the total closure of border crossings with the West Bank and restrictions on Palestinian entries in the Temple Mount of Jerusalem, after the announcement of protests after Muslim Friday prayers and 'Palestinian martyrs day' to be marked today. As the TV continues to air footage of smoke billowing from Gaza City, protest rallies are underway in various areas of the West Bank, Ramallah, Nablus, Bethlehem, Hebron and Jenin, against the attack on Gaza. On the humanitarian front, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) made serious accusations against the Israeli military: according to a report issued by the agency, "on 4 January Israeli foot soldiers evacuated approximately 110 Palestinians into a single-residence house in Zeitun (half of whom were children) warning them to stay indoors. Twenty-four hours later, Israeli forces shelled the home repeatedly, killing approximately 30". An investigation has been opened into the episode, defined by OCHA as "one of the gravest incidents since the beginning of operations". [BO]
