Situation and Operational Updates

  • Humanitarian Food Assistance: Enabled by the support of its donor partners, WFP scaled up general food distributions by 11 percent when compared with the previous month. E-vouchers were the most used modality for food assistance across WFP operational areas - 78 percent of WFP food assistance was provided through this modality to 1,184,164 people.
  • Flood Response: Across operational areas with food insecure people that are affected by the floods, WFP complements the Government's flood response by delivering hot meals or dry food rations as contextually appropriate. In Maiduguri, WFP has provided hot meals to 77,698 people across four of the temporary camps for flood-affected people since the floods happened on 10 September. In Dikwa, WFP also provided dry food rations to 2,500 flood-affected people not included in the monthly food assistance.
  • Nutrition: WFP integrates malnutrition prevention support in the general food assistance by providing complementary nutritious foods to pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as children (6- 24 months). In October, WFP reached 20,495 children and 7,358 pregnant and breastfeeding women with these top-ups of nutritious food.
  • Climate and Shock Resilient Food Systems: In alignment with wider efforts to reduce humanitarian needs over time by building climate and shock resilience food systems, WFP delivers communal and individual productivity enhancing support in areas where conditions allow. During October, WFP provided a package of solutions that entailed irrigation, mechanization, and capacity building support across Yobe and Adamawa state. In Mubi South and Michika Local Government area (LGAs) of Adamawa state, WFP facilitated a capacity strengthening workshop where 67 training participants were taught to leverage innovative approaches to reduce post-harvest losses and optimize their post-harvest practices. In Mamudo LGA where dry spells and electricity supply challenges were historical impediments to horticultural productivity, WFP has supported the construction of solar powered boreholes and water reservoirs with the capacity to facilitate the production of over 7,000 tons of vegetables.
  • WFP also provided mechanization support to 451 people in Yobe state. This support was aimed at enhancing the agribusiness process and boosting the income value for effort and time of the beneficiaries. Inputs such as hammer mills, multi-purpose mobile threshers and de-stoners were provided at cluster levels organized by the specific nodes of the value chains where participants were engaged.
  • Livelihood Strengthening Programming: WFP is leveraging its wide network of partners to facilitate opportunities that connect beneficiaries with skills and vocation training facilities where tailored capacity strengthening support can be provided. In Jigawa state, WFP collaborated with the Aliko Dangote Ultra-Modern Skills Acquisition Centre in Kano to train 57 community members from Birnin Kudu on agricultural tools fabrication. At the end of the training period, participants will receive trade test certification.
