OVERVIEW

• The rainy season has begun in the Gulf of Guinea countries, while the Sahel is preparing for its onset. While conditions are generally positive, some concerns remain regarding delayed rainfall in areas of Ghana, southern Togo and Benin, most of Nigeria, Cameroon, southern Chad and western Central African Republic. [WFP]

• The past 3 months has been generally hot and dry with the Harmattan contributing to meningitis surge in Northwest Nigeria and Ghana [WHO].

• Above-average rains are expected in the central Sahel. This increases the risk of flooding, especially in flood-prone zones around Lake Chad and its tributaries. A flash flood in Mokwa, Nigeria killed over 200 people [BBC].

• Forecasts through August indicate a significant rainfall deficit across western areas and the Gulf of Guinea, including southern Nigeria and the Cameroon. If these deficits materialize, they could severely impact crop production across much of the region.
