Highlights

In 2025, 8.8 million people in Northern Nigeria need humanitarian assistance, including 4.9 million children. However, reduced donor support has disrupted critical health, nutrition, WASH, and child protection services for the most vulnerable. UNICEF is aligning the humanitarian response in line with the ongoing humanitarian reset while also prioritizing children needs through response, localization, emergency preparedness and humanitarian development nexus.

Despite the doubling of the numbers of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) from 2024, admissions in the first quarter declined due to reduced operational capacity in treatment facilities highlighting urgent need to ensure access to life-saving services. Although UNICEF reached 157,879 children and caregivers with protection services in the Northeast, activities in Benue and Northwest states have been suspended due to lack of funds, despite rising risks of abductions and gender-based violence.

UNICEF requires US$ 255 million to deliver its 2025 Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) appeal.
