To better understand transhumance and the impact of vulnerabilities on transhumant communities, IOM, through its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), developed the Transhumance Tracking Tool (TTT) to collect key data on transhumance movements in Katsina and Zamfara States and support peaceful transhumance practices.
The purpose of the early warning alert system is to detect large-scale or unexpected movements of livestock as well as transhumance-related events, which could cause conflicts between herders and farmers. This system makes it possible to identify alerts related to a conflict event (event alert) or to a mass, early, late, or unexpected movement of livestock (prevention alert) that could lead to conflicts, which are often related to the use of natural resources or agro-pastoral practices. The system helps to understand the existing conflict resolution methods and to inform stakeholders to reduce tensions in the affected areas of intervention. These alerts, once transmitted to various actors, are used for conflict prevention or actions towards resolutions.
This report presents results from the alert tool for the month of December 2025. A network of key informants selected from members of the Community Peace Committees (CPCs) and local government area-based team leads was engaged for data collection. In December 2025, the TTT early warning tool captured 45 alerts in Batsari, Dan Musa, Dandume, Faskari, Jibia, Kankara, Sabuwa, and Safana LGAs of Katsina State, and Bungudu and Gusau LGAs of Zamfara State. The triangulated alerts included events (64%) and sudden movements (36%) during the period. Dandume A Ward, located in Dandume LGA of Katsina State, and Rijia Ward, located in Gusau LGA of Zamfara State, share the highest number of event alerts recorded.
