The transhumance baseline and infrastructure mapping was conducted in Batsari, Dandume, Dan musa, Faskari, Jibia, Kankara, Sabuwa and Safana local government areas (LGAs) of Katsina State, and Bungudu and Gusau LGAs of Zamfara State between 22 October and 20 November 2025. The mapping was supported by members of the community, farmers association members, herders association members, and displacement tracking matrix (DTM) enumerators. This was the first phase of the transhumance tracking in the Conflict Prevention Crisis Response and Resilience (CPCRR) project.
The baseline mapping identified a total of 109 transhumance corridors, 9 in Batsari, 11 in Dandume, 13 in Dan musa, 6 in Faskari, 20 in Jibia, 15 in Kankara, 5 in Sabuwa and 7 in Safana LGAs of Katsina State, and 12 in Bungudu and 11 in Gusau LGAs of Zamfara State. The mapping also identified 125 water points, 9 large livestock markets, 42 pasture areas/grazing reserve areas, 2 slaughter areas, 21 health posts, 16 water bodies along the corridors, 2 livestock feed banks, 4 veterinary posts/vaccination portals and 28 rest areas. Among the stock routes identified, 47 per cent had certain sections of the corridors either occupied or used for other purposes such as farms, homes, socio-educational infrastructure, etc.
The majority of the transhumants moving along these corridors originated from Nigeria (73%), followed by Niger (26%) and Mali (1%). The majority of transhumants (75%) had Nigeria as their country of destination, while the remaining 25 per cent had Niger as their country of destination.
