Executive Summary

Introduction:

Yobe State, situated in Northeast Nigeria, spans a vast geographic area of 47,153 square kilometers and is home to approximately 5.6 million people. However, the state has been grappling with the devastating consequences of armed conflict since 2009, including widespread displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition.

A comprehensive assessment, the SMART+ survey, was conducted in Machina Local Government Area (LGA) to evaluate the nutritional status and mortality rates of children under five years old. The survey, led by Action Contre la Faim (ACF) Nigeria, was supported financially by Global Affairs Canada and technically by ACF France.

The survey covered all wards in the Machina LGA, with all sampled settlements assessed. Data collection took place from November 4-13, 2024, during the harvest season, which typically sees a decrease in malnutrition. The primary objective was to determine the prevalence and severity of acute malnutrition among children aged 0-59 months, as well as crude and under-five mortality rates.

Notably, the survey utilized the innovative SMART+ digital platform, enabling faster and more accurate data collection and analysis. This assessment provides critical insights into the nutrition situation in Machina LGA, Yobe State, guiding future interventions and policy decisions to address the pressing needs of its population.
