MOKWA, NIGER STATE – In the aftermath of the devastating floods that swept through Mokwa on May 29, claiming over 150 lives and displacing hundreds more, the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has stepped in with life-saving support for affected families.
The Nigerian Red Cross has provided critical non-food items to 100 families in Mokwa, to alleviate their suffering and restore a sense of dignity in the wake of the disaster.
Each household received:
- Plastic buckets and jerry cans for safe water storage
- Mobile taps to support proper handwashing and hygiene
- A pack of Aquatabs-these are water purification tablets that kill harmful microorganisms in water, making it safe to drink
- Sleeping mats, blankets, and camp beds
- Shelter kits containing tools and material that families need to build temporary shelters
According to the Secretary General, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Abubakar Ahmed Kende.
“These items are essential for families trying to rebuild their lives after such a devastating event. Clean water, proper hygiene, and shelter are not luxuries — they are lifesaving."
The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) continues to work closely with local authorities like the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to monitor the situation and coordinate further relief efforts. More distributions are scheduled in the coming days to reach additional communities affected by the floods.
We will continue to provide updates as further assistance is delivered.
