Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) Rapid Needs Assessment Report - Flood Response MMC and Jere LGAs Maiduguri, September 2024

Background

More than 239,000 people were affected following severe flash flooding in the MMC and Jere LGAs in Maiduguri after the Alau Dam in neighbouring Konduga LGA breached its banks on the 9th of September 2024, following structural damage and continued heavy rains in Bama, Damboa and Gwoza LGAs. In Maiduguri, the most affected areas include Gwange, Bama Road, Maiduguri Zoo, Post office, State Secretariat, Lagos Street, Shehu’s palace, the Maiduguri Main Market, Customs / Gamboru areas, Budum, Specialist Hospital and Post Office general area. Government authorities evacuated residents in high-risk riverine areas to several locations into 6 camps with most of the IDP households being settled in Ali Sheriff, Bakasi Camp, Yerwa GGSS, Dalori, Teachers Village Flood IDP Camp and Asheik Jarma Primary School.

The Rapid Response Mechanism, following coordination with OCHA and the AAWG conducted rapid needs assessment to understand the immediate needs of the affected households settled in the camps. The RNA was conducted for between the 11th and 12th of September using a household questionnaire and WA
