The overnight flash floods on 9th September 2024 in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere local government areas (LGAs) affected close to 400,000 people and resulted in an unconfirmed number of fatalities and injuries. Access to hospitals, schools, and markets has been hampered, and damage to infrastructure, including bridges, has been recorded. Evacuation of people in high-risk areas to safer ground has been ongoing alongside joint Government and UN/partner needs assessments at the affected locations.
Immediate life-saving needs include Food, Water, and Shelter. Interventions to prevent disease outbreaks in camps and other temporary sites are also required, along with access to legal documentation as the IDPs managed to only escape with their lives, leaving all personal belongings behind.
