Highlights
The context is characterized by the ongoing relocation of the IDPS and the repatriation of the refugees from Cameroon to Borno State. In the midst of a crucial humanitarian funding reduction environment, the government of the BAY states is collaborating with partners to respond to the malnutrition cases surge (68% increase in the inpatient management of severe acute malnutrition with medical complication recorded in the Northeast Nigeria), the measles and the CSM outbreak and to prepare for cholera and the rainy season.
As of May 2024, the health sector has reached only 0.67 million targeted population (16%) with 8.9% funding coverage. Compared to the same period in 2023, 1.88 million people (44%) were reached with 26.6% funding coverage. As a result, there is a 17.7% funding gap in the health sector, which leaves roughly 1 million targeted individuals unmet, including underfive, pregnant, and lactating women. If the lack of a need-based budget for the year 2024 persists, by the end of the year, the sector will have about 2.55 million people targeted unmet. To raise more funds, the health sector, WHO, UNICEF, OCHA, and partners are stepping up their efforts in resources mobilization.
To better prepare for and respond to a potential cholera outbreak in BAY States, a Joint Health and WASH Sector Coordination Review Meeting with the participation of the State MOH, WASH State Departments, Health, and WASH partners was conducted. The main outcomes were the updating of the health and WASH coordination framework and the joint health and WASH plan for the response to the cholera outbreak in Bays State. In addition, the Joint Health Sector, Wash Sector, and IPC meeting was activated to enhance the readiness of the Rapid Response Team, update the Incident Action Plan, prepositioning of commodities, and assess the capacity and resources available geared towards preparedness for cholera outbreaks.
To assess the outcomes of joint sectoral implementation during the peak of the lean/rain season in Dikwa LGA, Borno State, the Nutrition, WASH, Health, and Food Security sectors are developing a study protocol to assess the change before and after the joint implementation of the project. The outcome of the study will guide further multisectoral joint programming.
