NORTHEAST CONTEXT
Education Amidst Crisis: Challenges in Nigeria's North-Eastern States
Across the landscape that characterizes Nigeria's north-eastern states, specifically Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY states), a protracted 13-year conflict has continued to wreck untold havoc leaving behind a trail of devastation and far-reaching consequences. About 16 million people, find themselves grappling with the profound and unrelenting effects of a humanitarian and protection crisis with no clear sign of ending soon.
The conflict and the resultant displacement of communities have led to a disruption of education for countless children. Nearly 2 million children of school-going age are not able to access learning across all the three BAY states (OCHA, July 2023). If no comprehensive solutions to ensure uninterrupted access to quality education are not urgently found, an entire generation of young productive lives will be lost. The urgency to address the educational deficit in this region is more critical now than ever. EiE interventions will not only empower the affected communities but also pave the way for a more resilient and prosperous future of the entire Nigeria population.
