Nigeria – Violence against civilians in the North-East ( DG ECHO, DG ECHO partners, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 07 November 2023)

  • On 5 November, armed groups attacked farmers, killing at least 15 and abducting unspecified number of them, in the villages Koshebe, Karkut and Bulabulin in the Mafa LGA, about 15 km from the capital Maiduguri in Borno State.
  • This attack follows two attacks on civilians in the Yobe State on 30 and 31 October where at least 40 villagers were killed according to media reports.
  • The attacks against civilians in Northeast Nigeria have intensified in 2023. Since 2009, over 100,000 direct conflict-related deaths have been recorded in the three northern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe and over 2.2 million people remain displaced.
  • In 2023, 8.3 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the Northeast, notably in protection, food, water, sanitation, shelter, health and education. So far, only 37% of the Humanitarian Response Plan of USD 1.3 billion have been funded.
