Nigeria - Increased violence in the Northwest (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners) (ECHO Daily Flash of 24 June 2024)

  • On the night of 22 June, armed groups attacked Maidabino village in the Northwestern State Katsina killing seven people, and according to residents 100 people were kidnapped mostly women and children.
  • Since 2018, the Northwest is plagued by an increase of violence and insecurity stemming from long-standing tensions between ethnic groups, evolved into and compounded by attacks from criminal groups and armed bandits.
  • This has led to a dire humanitarian situation with over 600,000 people displaced in the most affected States being Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Sokoto. The food and nutrition needs are at alarming levels with over 6 million people in food crisis during the lean season and over 530,000 children expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition.
  • Despite of the growing humanitarian needs in the Northwest, the situation remains significantly underreported and suffers from a lack of adequate support and coordination. DG ECHO has identified the Northwest as a forgotten humanitarian crisis.
