Nigeria - Increased violence in the Northcentral (DG ECHO, DG ECHO partners, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 19 June 2025)

  • Between 13 and 14 June 2025, a violent attack by armed groups on the Yelewata community in Benue State has claimed the death of 200 people. Many were injured during the attack, as well as houses and property were destroyed.
  • More than 3,000 people - including over 400 children - have been displaced and relocated by the government to the newly established Ultra International Modern Market IDP Camp. Government and humanitarian actors are providing initial support in water, non-food items (NFIs), food and health. Rapid need assessment indicates urgent need for protection services for children and women and for psychosocial support.
  • The attack follows a series of similar attacks caused by the tensions between farmers and herders over access to land, food and water, as a source for both farming and grazing, further worsened by overlapping ethnic and religious divisions.
  • In 2024 and 2025, some 6,900 people were killed in such attacks across Benue State and over 450,000 people are displaced, many living in overcrowded camps under harsh conditions.
