Between 21 and 25 May 2025, multiple incidents of farmer-herder clashes occurred across seven communities in the Benue State resulting in the death of 24 people (over 40 people according to press) and 170 injured, and affecting over 5,300 individuals, of which half of them are children. Rapid needs assessments identified security, health, food, non-food items (NFI) and psychosocial support most prevalent, as well as water, sanitation and hygiene.
Since recent years, tensions between farmers and herders as well as ethnic and religious groups in Benue State have intensified with recurrent attacks, kidnapping and theft. The conflict is mainly driven by competition over access to land, food and water, as a source for both farming and grazing.
The conflict has led to large scale displacement with over 450,000 people displaced and hundreds killed.
