Nigeria: Humanitarian Dashboard (January - October 2017)

SITUATION OVERVIEW

The crisis in Nigeria’s north-east is one of the most severe in the world, with 8.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in 2017 in the worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, out of whom 6.9 million are targeted for assistance. Now in its ninth year, the crisis shows no sign of abating.

In October, the cholera outbreak was contained in most affected parts of Borno, though some cases continue to emerge, in particular in Guzamala. The start of the dry season has re-opened access to areas that had been cut off due to flooding for several months, such as Ngala and Rann, and life-saving aid distributions were able to resume.

However, unpredictable population movements continue to pose a major challenge in delivering aid in a timely and targeted manner: in October alone, 4,000 Nigerian refugees returned from Niger and close to 3,000 moved internally.
