Crisis levels of food insecurity persist in the northeast due to the effects of conflict

KEY MESSAGES

 Boko Haram-related conflict, as well as a declared state of emergency, is still ongoing in the northeast. The regional effects of this conflict have included below-average crop production levels during the last growing season, an early depletion of household food stocks, disruptions to agricultural marketing activities, and reduced income-generating opportunities. As a result, northeastern areas will face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) acute food insecurity through September.

 Agricultural and fishing households in areas affected by last year’s floods have yet to recover their normal livelihoods and are having difficulties accessing food due to above-average prices, below-average household food stocks, and limited income opportunities. Consequently, poor households in these areas will face Stressed (IPC Phase 2) food insecurity through the end of the outlook period in September.

 In areas that were not affected by either conflict or flooding, crop production levels were normal during both the recent main and off-season harvests. In addition, income levels have been relatively average. As a result, households are accessing food normally and will face Minimal (IPC Phase 1) acute food insecurity through September.
