Nigeria - Food and nutrition crisis (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, UNICEF, IPC – Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, IFRC) (ECHO Daily Flash of 18 June 2025)

  • Nigeria is faced with an unprecedented nutrition crisis which particularly affects the Northeast (Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States) and the Northwest (Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara States). An estimated 5.44 million children under five years are acutely malnourished, with 2 million projected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition requiring lifesaving treatment, especially during the peak of the lean season from June to September 2025.
  • In response to the alarming levels of malnutrition in the Northern States the International Federation of the Red Cross has launched an Emergency Appeal for Acute Malnutrition, seeking EUR 5.3 million for the response in Nigeria.
  • The European Union has allocated EUR 500,000 to support the Emergency Appeal aiming to support lifesaving activities for over 30,000 children in urgent need of treatment. This includes community outreach, screening, outpatient care for uncomplicated severe cases using ready-to-use therapeutic food while the most complex cases will be referred to health centres for specialised care.
