UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
23 AUGUST 1988

1. FIRST WEEK AUGUST FLOODS AFFECTED 14 OUT OF 20 LOCALGOVERNMENT AREAS IN KANO STATE. ON 16 AUGUST 20-YEAR OLD BAGAUDA DAM NEAR KANO WITH STORAGE CAPACITY OF 22 MILLION CUBIC LITERS OFWATER REACHED THE HIGHT OF 42 MILLION CUBIC LITERS AND COLLAPSED.

2. 23 PERSONS DEAD, 200,000 PEOPLE RENDERED HOMELESS. 18,000 HOUSES DESTROYED AND 14,000 FARMS WASHED AWAY.

3. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RELEASED US DOLLARS 1 MILLION FROM
NATIONAL EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND AND DISTRIBUTED GRAINS WORTH US
DOLLARS 1 MILLION TO AFFECTED PEOPLE.

4. IMMEDIATE RELIEF RQUIREMENTS ARE NOW CLOTHING AND BLANKETS.
FOR REHABILITAION OF COLLAPSED BAGAUDA DAM AND RESETTLEMENT OF
FLOOD VICTIMS US DOLLARS 21 MILLION NEEDED. 34,000 BAGS OF
GRAINS COST US DOLLARS 1.4 MILLION ALSO REQUIRED.

5. GOVERNMENT HAS NOT SO FAR REQUESTED INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
