The humanitarian impact due to the heavy rainfall, floods and the Alau Dam overflowing that have been affecting north-eastern Nigeria since 7 September, is increasing.
According to media, as of 12 September, the overflow of the Alau Dam on the Ngadda River occurred on 10 September, and flooded Maiduguri city, in Borno state in north-eastern Nigeria. At least 30 people died, more than 414,000 have been displaced, approximately 1 million people have been affected, and thousands of houses and structures have been destroyed.
The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode (EMSR753) on 10 September to provide the damage assessment, one map has been produced so far.
On 13-14 September, more rainfall is expected over Nigeria, with locally heavy rainfall over the central western and south-eastern part of the country.
The Borno State government has appealed for humanitarian support and joint government and UN/humanitarian partners needs assessments are ongoing as well as emergency support to address priority needs in shelter, clean water and food.
