Nigeria - Floods and dam overflow, update (Copernicus EMSR, Reliefweb, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 13 September 2024)

  • The humanitarian impact due to the heavy rainfall, floods and the Alau Dam overflowing that have been affecting north-eastern Nigeria since 7 September, is increasing.
  • According to media, as of 12 September, the overflow of the Alau Dam on the Ngadda River occurred on 10 September, and flooded Maiduguri city, in Borno state in north-eastern Nigeria. At least 30 people died, more than 414,000 have been displaced, approximately 1 million people have been affected, and thousands of houses and structures have been destroyed.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode (EMSR753) on 10 September to provide the damage assessment, one map has been produced so far.
  • On 13-14 September, more rainfall is expected over Nigeria, with locally heavy rainfall over the central western and south-eastern part of the country.
  • The Borno State government has appealed for humanitarian support and joint government and UN/humanitarian partners needs assessments are ongoing as well as emergency support to address priority needs in shelter, clean water and food.
