Led by the World Food Programme (WFP), the ETS was activated in North-East Nigeria in November 2016 in response to the protection crisis. ETS Nigeria SitReps are issued monthly.

In 2022, the ETS has provided reliable internet connectivity services to 3,163 users from 102 organizations across eight sites. Further, the ETS is providing security communications services to 1,367 humanitarian responders in ten sites across north-east Nigeria.

Activities
Coordination
The ETS hosted the monthly local Working Group meeting on 21 September to discuss updates and challenges as part of efforts to provide technical support to the local working group members.
Internet connectivity
Since the beginning of the year, the ETS has provided reliable internet connectivity services to 3,163 users from 102 organizations―including 17 UN agencies and 85 NGOs―across eight sites in north-east Nigeria.
The ETS team deployed to Banki, Bama, Damasak and Monguno to conduct VSAT maintenance and to install a portable satellite terminal (BGAN) in the hub.
The ETS team remotely resolved VSAT satellite issues in response to service interruptions in Bama, Dikwa and Gwoza.
The ETS extended internet connectivity to the UNHAS check-in lounge and cargo section in Maiduguri International Airport. Humanitarians registered on the ETS network now have access to connectivity at the UNHAS lounge.
Security communications
The ETS is providing security communications services to 1,367 humanitarian responders in ten sites across north-east Nigeria.
In September, the ETS in Nigeria programmed a total of three handheld radios for three humanitarian organizations ― OCHA, UNWOMEN, and WFP.
The team deployed to Damasak and Monguno from 1 to 8 September to re-install security communications equipment in the reinforced bunkers.
{TESS+} conducted a mission from 19 to 30 September to assess the UNDSS security communications infrastructure in Nigeria. The ETS is on standby for any follow-up action required from ETS the UNDSS in Nigeria.
With the support of {TESS+}, issues were resolved in the newly re-established remote SOC in Dikwa.
Services for communities
The ETS is planning to implement a pilot Public Announcement System service in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Bama to ensure communities have access to information on humanitarian assistance including food registration, water distribution schedules, and security incidents. The pilot project addresses information and communications needs identified among affected communities in north-east Nigeria following two assessment missions conducted in Maiduguri and Bama in August and November 2021. The procurement process commenced in September 2022.
User support The team resolved 90 issues reported to the ETS helpdesk in September.
