NCDC Lassa Fever Situation Report Epi Week 20: 15th – 21st May 2023

Highlights

• In week 20, the number of new confirmed increased from 7 in epi week 19 2023 to 8 cases. These were reported from Ondo, Taraba, Edo, Bauchi and Gombe States (Table 3)

• Cumulatively from week 1 to week 20, 2023, 162 deaths have been reported with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 17.2% which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2022 (19.8%)

• In total for 2023, 28 States have recorded at least one confirmed case across 106 Local Government Areas (Figures 2 and 3)

• Seventy-two (72%) of all confirmed Lassa fever cases were reported from these three states (Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi) while 28% were reported from 25 states with confirmed Lassa fever cases. Of the 72% confirmed cases, Ondo reported 32%, Edo 29%, and Bauchi 11%

• The predominant age group affected is 21-30 years (Range: 1 to 93 years, Median Age: 32 years). The male-to-female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:0.9 (Figure 4)

• The number of suspected cases increased compared to that reported for the same period in 2022.

• One new Healthcare worker was affected in the reporting week 20 • National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) activated to coordinate the response activities at all levels
