The countries of the Lake Chad Basin continue to face security challenges that undermine the ability for humanitarian workers to deliver aid and for crisis-affected people to access basic social services.
Despite this, as of 14 December 2023 humanitarian organisations have been able to reach 4.4 million people, or 55 per cent of the people targeted in the humanitarian response plans. The number of internally displaced persons remained stable throughout the reporting period, while the number of refugees decreased compared to the previous snapshot, with 280,200 people.
In Nigeria, the increased insecurity in Borno and Yobe states is due to a number of factors, in particular threats and attacks by non-state armed groups, ambushes, use of explosive devices, increased criminality and clashes between farmers and herders. In Adamawa State, flooding on 20 to 23 October affected some 8,500 households and caused mass displacement, particularly of women, children and the elderly.
