On 11 July 2025, armed bandits attacked the community of Samawa Town in Bukkuyum ward of the Bukkuyum LGA, in Zamfara State. The attack affected 283 individuals across 56 households and displaced 58 individuals across 21 households to the community of Bakin Kasuwa in Bukkuyum ward, of the Bukkuyum LGA. The affected individuals included 159 children, 77 women, and 47 men. No injuries or fatalities were reported. Food, shelter and non-food items (NFIs) were identified as the most prevalent needs. Following these events, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) field staff conducted rapid assessments to inform the humanitarian community, alongside the government and partners, and to enable a more targeted response. Nigeria’s north-west zone is a site of ongoing crisis, characterised by long-standing tensions between ethnic and religious groups, often resulting in attacks and banditry or ‘hirabah’. These attacks involve kidnapping and grand larceny along major highways by criminal groups. In recent years, the crisis has accelerated, resulting in widespread displacement across the north-west region. In addition to conflict-related crises, the region is increasingly affected by climate-related disasters, particularly seasonal flooding caused by heavy rainfall and riverbank/dam overflows.
