Impact of the freeze of US funding on protection activities in Northeastern Nigeria Findings from a survey among PSNE partners (February 2025)

Key findings

At least 17 protection partners reported being directly affected by the freeze of US funding, as direct recipients of these funds. Of them, 16 partners implement programmes for GBV, 9 partners for child protection, 7 partners for general protection, 4 partners for mine action, and 2 partners for HLP.

An estimated 37 percent of the protection budget of partners affected by the freeze was supposed to be funded by US grants. This amounts to 13.5 percent of the total funding requirement of the Protection Sector Northeastern Nigeria in 2025.

Protection activities affected by the US funding freeze target a total of 45 LGAs (see table 2). Of them, 20 LGAs were classified as severity 3 by the PSNE for the 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) and 14 LGAs with severity 4.
